3 Step Framework to Become an Intentional Man

Last week we spoke about the original sin of man: passivity.

If you missed it, read it here.

The antidote to passivity is intentionality.

3 Step Framework for Becoming an Intentional Man.

1) Identify Your Areas of Responsibility

We all have them.

Question is: how are they doing under your care?

  • Work, marriage, health, creative work, spiritual life, relationships, etc.

List them out and figure out where you need to turn up the intentionality.

2) Write The Vision

Intention = first vision, then action

  • Vision: future-focused - creates a target
  • Action: present-focused - gives steps toward the target

Vision is often overlooked and as a result, you fall off.

Why?

Because vision sets a north star that underpins and gives reason for your action.

Vision = I see a world where ________

Get specific. You should be able to clearly see and feel what you see.

Example:

  • “I see a world where my son and I have an unbreakable bond through adventure where we talk about the issues of life”.
  • "I see a world where I am healthy in my body in order to have energy and resilience to be sharp and productive and to lead well at work."

Do not underestimate vision.

The clearer the vision, the easier the action.

3) Take Action

Action = Today I will _______

Actions are step you take that get you closer to the vision.

This can be big or small.

Do what you can do, not what you can’t do.

Example:

  • Today I will take my son on a hike after school // plan a fun day trip for next month // pray for 10 minutes each day and ask God who he has made my son to be
  • Today I will start each morning with a 20 min walk outside // stop drinking afternoon coffee // cook 1 more meal at home this week

This framework is entry level stuff for learning to reign in life.

It's simple but not easy.

It's easy to read this and go "awesome, love it" and then do nothing.

But I'm willing to bet there is an area in your life that could use this.

So take 30 minutes this week:

  1. Identify an area of responsibility
  2. Write a vision
  3. Make a deposit into the vision

You will feel an energy in your day that wasn't there before.

Give it a go!

Till next time.

The biggest problem with how we understand manhood is this: We focus on the image of a man instead of the substance. Image is the cowboy, CEO, body-builder, athlete, soldier, etc. It's understandable. These are images we can quickly and easily identify with (or not). Image is what a man does.Substance is who a man is. Image is shallow work.Substance is deep inner work (foreign territory for most men). Let’s unpack this through one of the most famous heroic stories in all of literature: David...

Samson is a picture of the modern masculine archetype. A man who left the mundane life of his home town and journeyed exotic lands, battled wild beasts, romanced women, and drank deeply in rich cultural experiences. We must pay attention. Let's dive in. The Set Up: The Allure of Culture Samson was born during...

The Original Sin Of Man I recently re-read the story of Adam & Eve something jumped off the page that changed my entire perspective. We often focus on (and blame) Eve for the fall of mankind. But this time I saw something different. I saw the original sin of man: Passivity. Let me explain: (my working definition of passivity: neglecting God-given responsibility) It’s going through the motions It's living life in the background It's sitting in the stands vs being in the arena It's leaning back...
